Ancillary data from animal-borne cameras as an ecological survey tool for marine communities

چکیده

Abstract Underwater visual surveys represent an essential component of coastal marine research and play a crucial role in supporting the management systems. However, logistical financial considerations can limit availability survey data some While biologging camera tag devices are being attached to increasing diversity animals collect behavioral information about focal species, ancillary imagery collected also be used analytical techniques developed for diver-based surveys. We illustrate this approach by extracting from shark-borne deployments focused on behavior White shark ( Carcharodon carcharias) off Gansbaai, South Africa, Grey Reef Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) within Chagos Archipelago. Within giant kelp forest environment Gansbaai we could determine spatial density thali underlying substrate composition. coral reef environment, animal-borne video allowed us approximate percent type benthic cover, as well growth form genus corals down upper mesophotic zone. enumerated fish species-level abundance over flat wall environments. established dive-survey methods analyze found results broadly comparable two systems studied. Our work illustrates broad applicability data, which is analogous quality analysis community frameworks. As tags associated technologies continue develop adapted new environments, utilising these have wide-ranging applications maximise overall cost–benefit ratio deployments.

Water Environment Assessment as an Ecological Red Line Management Tool for Marine Wetland Protection

A 'red line' was established, identifying an area requiring for ecological protection in Tianjin, China. Within the protected area of the red line area, the Qilihai wetland is an important ecotope with complex ecological functions, although the ecosystem is seriously disturbed due to anthropogenic activities in the surrounding areas. This study assesses the water quality status of the Qilihai w...

Procedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment

This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...

Social Interactions of Juvenile Brown Boobies at Sea as Observed with Animal-Borne Video Cameras

While social interactions play a crucial role on the development of young individuals, those of highly mobile juvenile birds in inaccessible environments are difficult to observe. In this study, we deployed miniaturised video recorders on juvenile brown boobies Sula leucogaster, which had been hand-fed beginning a few days after hatching, to examine how social interactions between tagged juveni...
